Hi everyone! Last January 7-8, my friends and I were trekking Luzon’s highest mountain and the Philippines’ third highest mountain – Mt. Pulag. It was also January of 2016 when I first ascended this mountain via the “killer trail” Akiki and descended via Ambangeg. At first, I was still hesitant to join because I already scaled the mountain via the same trails and second, I could not forget how I was extremely bothered by the cold temperature at the top (Sorry Queen Elsa. Lol.). When I was really conflicted, this conversation with my friend helped me decide:
Elevation: 2922 MASL (old), 2,926.047 MASL (new)
Location: Akiki Trail – Kabayan, Benguet
Difficulty: Akiki Trail – 7/9
Trek to Summit: Akiki Trail – 10-11 hours
(Edit: Mt. Pulag’s elevation is now at 2,926.047 MASL as declared by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority or NAMRIA last April 4-14, 2016. As proof of this, a new summit marker can be found beside the old one.)
While there were moments along the trail that made me question my decision of joining, I regret nothing because seeing my mother major mountain again brought back so many happy memories. And like what they say, it will always be a new experience in the mountains no matter how many times you have been there.
Hi everyone! During the long weekend last August 27-29, 2016, I was up and about trekking what seemed to be the longest hiking trip of my life by far – the Kibungan Cross Country Traverse which is said to be approximately 50+ kilometers with an entry point in Benguet and an exit point in La Union. According to the locals, the complete traverse takes hikers to three provinces (Benguet – Ilocos Sur – La Union) through 15 mountains.
Originally, I was just supposed to do the Kibungan Circuit with my Amuyao team. This only requires summiting three mountains but due to unforeseen circumstances, this did not push through. Luckily, my friend invited me to join her climb in the same area but instead of just the circuit, it was the cross-country traverse.
Elevation: Highest point between 1900MASL – 2000MASL* (the trail is rolling so expect an increase and decrease in elevation)
Location: Sugpon, Benguet – Santol, La Union
Trek Duration: 3D2N (26 – 28 hours)
Personally, I think this is probably the most stressful hike I have done so far because of the rainy weather and the circumstances that resulted from it. Nonetheless, it is also one of the most fulfilling.
Hi everyone! A month ago, I was invited to do a complete traverse of Mt. Purgatory which passes through six different mountains. To be honest, this did not spark my interest at first because the mountains involved in the traverse do not offer great views as opposed to other Cordillera mountains (this initial assumption is based from all the photos I see online and my friends’ testimonies).
However, my friends also told me about how challenging trail is and this coupled with the fact that the traverse is part of my bucket list made me more excited to experience it firsthand.
Hi! Just two weeks after successfully reaching the summit of Luzon’s highest mountain, Mt. Pulag, our group was at it again, this time, aiming for Luzon’s second and third highest mountains. Fortunately, the climb was scheduled during the Valentine’s weekend (February 13 and 14) so I was able to avoid the crowded city and I was able to celebrate Valentine’s Day doing one of my favorite things – hiking.
Mt. Timbak (Luzon 3)
Elevation: 2,717+ MASL
Location: Atok, Benguet
Difficulty: 2/9 (Minor)
Trek to Summit: 10 minutes
Mt. Tabayoc (Luzon 2)
Elevation: 2,842+ MASL
Location: Kabayan, Benguet
Difficulty: 6/9 (Major)
Trek to Summit: 3 hours 40 minutes
As mentioned in my previous posts, going to the Cordilleras is one of my goals for this year and I am really grateful to have been able to grab the opportunity to climb my 14th and 15th mountains, one of which is my second major climb.
Hi! I just came back from a quick vacation and hiking trip which has been nothing short of amazing. A couple of weeks ago, I was invited by my friend, Robin, to join his hike to Mt. Ulap in Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet. I was hesitant at first because of the location and conflict in schedule (as it coincides with my fun run) but since Mt. Ulap is included in my hike list, I agreed.
Height: 1846 MASL
Location: Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet
Trek to Summit: 5 hours, 15 minutes*
Originally, I was planning to go to the Cordillera Mountains by 2016; I never thought I would be ending the year with a climb to one! Read on below to know more about my 11th hike last December 13, 2015.
